About Bibiana
Bibiana Lee took up art courses and workshops at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore (Nafa) and also at Nrityalaya Aesthetics Society, in Singapore. Although her initial interest was in Chinese painting, she now focuses on Western Art. She also learned oil painting under renowned Chinese artist Chang Xihua.
Took drawing classes under Indonesian Barli Sasmitawinata and figure sketching, abstract painting in acrylic and sculpting under renowned Teguh Ostenrik upon her return to Indonesia. Today she lives in Jakarta and works in a variety of artistic media, including painting, sculpture, 3-dimensional art works, and video and photography. Bibiana has found inspiration from a diverse range of sources.
From basic Chinese painting, she has progressed to still lifes and realist styles in oil, to abstract expressionism in acrylic paint. Her recent mixed media works may include digital prints on canvas which is layered with paint or oil sticks or charcoal. Although her initial 3-dimensional works started with clay modelling, resin and bronze sculptures, she now likes to experiment with collaborative works with people from various industries. Sometimes she collaborates with people in other industries such as the glass industry for her installation works at Bentara Budaya, Jakarta (2nd- Opinion exhibition). Her collaboration with the ceramic tableware industry such as her M’bok Jamu tableware series was a success. It was shortlisted in the 2005 Jakarta Design Award.
Her abstract (and semi-abstract) works are mainly used for interior decorations. But she also likes the challenges that conceptual art works that she produces for contemporary art exhibitions that are based on her personal experience and observations of the world today. For such conceptual art works, she often incorporates text in her art works, be they in 2 or 3 dimensional forms.
