Are You a Peranakan?

Peranakan refers to the process of two or more cultures coming together within a cultural space without abandoning the characteristics of the original/local culture. This intersection or meeting of cultures—within the fields of humanities, arts and culture, anthropology, and literature—is often associated with the concept of hybridity. The emergence of critical awareness in responding to postcolonial discourse, particularly among formerly colonized nations including Indonesia, has sparked the creativity of several artists in addressing hybridity as a phenomenon that often leads to issues of identity.

“Are You a Peranakan?” is the chosen theme for Bibiana Lee’s solo exhibition. This theme is rich in critical and reflective attitudes, particularly in the context of questioning Peranakan identity and interpreting local cultural values in a contemporary context.

As an artist who prioritizes innovation and a visionary approach in her practice, Bibiana consistently presents fresh visual ideas—especially through her choices of concept, material, media, and technique.

As a Peranakan Chinese artist, Bibiana is drawn to Batik Tiga Negeri motifs as a source of inspiration. Batik Tiga Negeri is a cultural heritage of Indonesia; it not only holds exceptional aesthetic value but is also rich in symbolic and philosophical meaning. For example, she draws from Batik Tiga Negeri and classical motifs such as parang, gunung ringgit, gringsing, kawung, chrysanthemum flowers, isen batu pecah, beras tumpah, and animal motifs like the phoenix and qilin. Batik Tiga Negeri symbolizes hybridity among Chinese, Dutch, and Javanese cultures and represents the spirit of diversity through cultural intersection.

Amidst the rapid rise of technology – particularly digital art – a new form of art has emerged, intersecting with technological innovation, and embodying a character and strength that resonates with the spirit of its time.
