From mid-December 2022, Bibiana Lee participates in the first edition of artina.sarinah, with the theme wastu/loka/kala, aimed to project a creative realm that transcends the rigid boundaries of form (wastu), space (loka), and time (kala) by exhibiting her I AM CHINA project again.
This project draws on her background as an Indonesian of Chinese descent, a position that places her at the intersection of two marginalized identities – as a woman and as a member of a minority group. She channels this sense of unease into works that echo the aesthetic of vibrant Peranakan porcelain. For her, the material’s inherent fragility aptly symbolizes the vulnerability of the Chinese-Indonesian community, which has a recurring history of being targeted by acts of violence. By presenting delicate, decorative objects to address sensitive and complex issues, Bibiana highlights the irony embedded within social perceptions. At the same time, she offers a critical commentary on the socio-cultural stereotypes that are arbitrarily imposed to serve the interests of dominant groups.
