Motif: Lamaran
The interactive installation, I (DON’T) SEE COLOUR, is a combination of boxing gloves and punching bags, which acts as a metaphor for violence. Bibiana Lee adopts the colour blind theory to produce motifs and text on the punching bags (that represent the recipients of HATE, DISCRIMINATION, PREJUDICE, RACISM etc…) and boxing gloves that represent the perpetrators of and all kinds of XENOPHOBIC acts.
The idea of being blind to (skin) colour or ‘colour blind’ is utopian as everyone has preconceived notions and impressions of a certain racial group or people of a particular skin colour . The idea that if one doesn’t see colour, one won’t hate. Won’t discriminate. Won’t bully. Won’t terrorize. Won’t abuse. Won’t be prejudiced. Won’t be a supremacist. Won’t condemn. Won’t stereotype. If we take away colour, there is only one race – the human race.
The reality is that most, if not all of us see colour – skin colour of the different races. Therefore we have to acknowledge the different colours and the differences that exist. Only by recognizing, acknowledging and respecting the differences of the different races and admitting that racism exists can we then take steps towards building inclusive societies that embrace diversity.
