Project I AM CHINA for id: Sengkarut Identitas

National Gallery of Indonesia
2019

Prejudice or discrimination against a minority group, based on a different lifestyle, religion or ethnicity is around us – not only in Indonesia but throughout the world.

This I AM CHINA project, which is made for the id : Sengkarut Identitas exhibition at the Indonesian National Gallery is a narration about the Peranakan Indonesian Chinese, who is a minority group in Indonesia.

The Peranakan Chinese porcelain with its distinct motifs and colours is used to represent the Peranakan Indonesian Chinese. The fragile Peranakan porcelain is an apt metaphor to represent the fragility of being an Indonesian Chinese.

Carla Bianpoen (freelance writer)

‘While text and critical remarks on porcelain ware are poignantly referring to the dark sides of minorities’ life, using fragile and refined locally acculturated  porcelain with its typical colors testifies to Bibiana’s tactile sense of prudency in the handling of identity amidst rampant prejudice.’

Asmujo J Irianto (curator)

‘Sebagai seniman, kekuatan Bibiana Lee terletak pada kemampuannya mempresentasikan persoalan politik identitas melalui pengolahan medium dan presentasi yang ‘pas’ dan artikulatif’.
