Saya, Engkau dan Kita is a piece that shows the of various cultures brought by migrants to a metropolitan city. This work uses the Batik Tiga Negri (a Peranakan cultural heritage) as metaphor. Bibiana Lee combines traditional batik patterns with symbols from her daily life as a resident of Jakarta by adapting the three typical  Batik Tiga Negri colours, namely red, blue and brown.  The phoenix motif in this work symbolizes renewal and brings new hope of better things to come – as aspired by migrants and residents of the city.

Jakarta, like other metropolitan cities in the world, has become a magnet for migration from within the country and also from all corners of the world by those who want to fulfil their hopes of achieving a better life. The migrants brought their own cultural diversity and blend into the various cultures in Jakarta. A unique culture, that is plural and hybrid is then spawned.

Similar to immigrants from conflict areas to relatively safer places of asylum, native residents and immigrants will gradually experience a hybrid and multi-cultural transformation to achieve harmony.
