Sum, absence and the shades

Rubanah Underground Hub, Jakarta

In this solo exhibition, Bibiana Lee delves into questions of identity, inviting audiences to confront their own biases and prejudices—particularly those rooted in differences of skin colour, habits, ways of life, and belief systems. She urges viewers to reflect on how individuals are accepted or rejected based on these surface distinctions. By symbolically removing the visible marker of skin tone, Bibiana challenges us to look beyond appearances and reconsider how we perceive difference.

In Sum, Absence and the Shades, visitors are invited to participate by making black-and-white prints of their hands and pasting them on the gallery walls. This simple yet powerful gesture highlights the shared physicality of human hands—devoid of pigmentation—and shifts attention toward our common humanity. Through this act of collective mark-making, Bibiana encourages reflection on empathy, unity, and the deeper connections that bind us beyond what the eye can see.
